It is continually happening. Every day as we go about our normal lives/ use our phones/ tweet/ browse/ commute to work/ even buy a cup of coffee; we unknowingly create un-intended impact with the things we do. These artifacts come into existence as the byproducts of our actions, and are traces of the ways in which we are continuously impacting each other and our surroundings in the world.
Thomas Saint John is an American artist/activist living in New York City. Engaging a variety of media, ranging from painting and photography to new media and installation, Saint John explores the obscured and often imperceptible impact that we un-intentionally create through our everyday lives and more broadly as humanity at large.
Proximity plays a large role in the evolution of Saint John’s work. Fascinated by what Goethe referred to as ‘lehr and wanderjahre’, this idea of having a period of years where one would learn and migrate; the artist relocated to Europe in 2009 and went on to live in London, Zurich, and subsequently Africa. It was during this period that everything shifted – perceptions, values, ideas. Saint John is fascinated with the blurred lines between science, art and technology. Having worked at the forefront of emerging new media in California, and formally trained with a BFA and Master’s degree in Engineering & Design; he comes to these themes naturally.
